Celebrating 30 Years of the Torres Strait Islander Flag

To honor the 30th anniversary of the Torres Strait Islander Flag being proclaimed an official flag of Australia, the Royal Australian Mint is releasing two special $2 coins on July 3rd, 2025. These coins, available at thegiftmart.com.au, celebrate the enduring spirit, heritage, and identity of Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Designed by Royal Australian Mint coin designer Elyssa Waterford, both the 2025 $2 Fine Silver Proof Coin and the 2025 $2 Coloured Uncirculated Coin feature the 'C' Mintmark and showcase powerful cultural symbolism. The central design highlights the Dhari (traditional headdress) and five-pointed star, significant emblems from the flag. A circular color print around them represents the flag's colors: green for the land, blue for the sea, and black for the Torres Strait Islander people, framed by two white stripes.

Adding deeper cultural layers, a fine pattern inspired by traditional netting and fishing traps lies beneath the color print, symbolizing the deep connection of Torres Strait Islander communities to the sea and Country. Further enhancing this tribute, the coin's field features artwork by Erub artist Lavinia Ketchell, celebrating the ocean, reef, and the vital role of fishing in their culture. The obverse of the coin features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, designed by Daniel Thorne.
