Five Historic Innovations Celebrated on Official Coinage

The heart of this collection honors five groundbreaking milestones engineered right here in Australia. Through artistic sketch-style designs, the Bright Ideas Coin Program pays homage to each iconic breakthrough:

1. Stump Jump Plough (1876)

Pioneered by Richard and Clarence Bowyer Smith in South Australia, the Stump Jump Plough transformed farming in Australia. By allowing the ploughshare to bounce over hidden tree stumps and boulders rather than snapping, the Stump Jump Plough opened millions of acres of previously unusable land to agriculture.

2. Black Box Flight Recorder (1953)

Global aviation safety was redefined when Australian research scientist Dr. David Warren invented the Black Box Flight Recorder. Combining cockpit voice recording with flight data, the Black Box Flight Recorder became an indispensable tool for investigating aviation accidents and preventing future disasters worldwide.

3. Jaffle Maker (1974)

A beloved staple of campfires and family kitchens, the Jaffle Maker reshaped the way we enjoy toasted snacks. Originally patented by Breville's John O’Brien, the Jaffle Maker introduced crisp, sealed-edge toasted sandwiches to dining tables across the globe.

4. Baby Safety Capsule (1984)

Child road safety experienced a massive leap forward with the development of the rear-facing Baby Safety Capsule. Engineered in Victoria by Colin Lumsden and fellow researchers, the Baby Safety Capsule safely decoupled forces during vehicular collisions, dramatically cutting infant road fatalities.

5. WLAN Technology (1993)

Almost every modern computer, smartphone, and smart home device relies on fast wireless internet pioneered in Australia. CSIRO scientists invented high-speed WLAN Technology by solving reverberation challenges indoors, establishing the foundational patents for modern WLAN Technology that powers today's global Wi-Fi network.

Together, these five milestones reflect the enduring legacy of Australian Inventions that changed the world.
