To commemorate this special anniversary, the Mint has released two stunning new $2 coins. These coins are a heartfelt tribute to the enduring spirit and rich heritage of the Torres Strait Islander community. They're a beautiful way to honor this important part of Australia's history and culture

The Torres Strait Islander people are one of Australia's two distinct Indigenous cultures, with strong ties to their land, sea, and traditions, notably as seafarers. Their flag, designed by Bernard Namok, is a powerful symbol of identity. The green represents land, blue for the sea, and black for the people, divided by black lines. A white dhari (headdress) signifies culture, and a five-pointed star beneath it represents peace, navigation, and the five island groups.
